Advocacy Committee

What is Advocacy?

(From NCPTA)

Advocacy is a constitutional right and a proud American tradition. It’s the most important opportunity, after voting, that Americans have to be involved in their government. PTA is one of the nation’s oldest and most successful advocacy organizations. PTA has been an advocate for children since 1897 and has always been at the forefront in supporting laws that benefit children. One PTA purpose is to secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth.

North Carolina PTA members can fulfill this mission and help brighten the future of every child.

The WMMS Advocacy Committee is a required Standing Committee that must exist in order for our PTA to be in compliance with NCPTA Uniform Bylaws.  Staying in compliance is important to our PTA as it ensures our non-profit status is never at risk

The Advocacy Committee will elect a chair at their first meeting, and that chair is a member of the WMMS PTA Board of Directors.  As such, the chair agrees to attend monthly board meetings with the WMMS Executive Board and update the board on activities, issues or concerns.

The Advocacy Committee:

May have one or more members; elected by November 1 by BOD
Develop and organize meetings, activities and programs to further the goals and purposes of PTA
Tasked with improving communications and relationships between school staff and families,
Educating families and caregivers on important issues related to health and educational success for their children
Helping make each child’s potential a reality

If you are interested in serving on this committee – please contact our PTA Board here

Nominations Committee

What is a Nominations Committee?

This committee, formed in January, nominates and presents a slate of officers at the May General Meeting for the following school year. Responsibilities include: electing own chairperson; meeting as a group to identify individuals to fill the roles of the executive committee; creating and maintaining the spreadsheet with contact information for volunteers wiling to serve; contacting individuals to determine their willingness to serve in the nominated role; presenting a slate of officers at the May PTA General Meeting; assisting with the vote for the slate of candidates at the May General Membership Meeting. Keeps Executive Board Members informed.

The Nominations committee will elect a chair at their first meeting, and that chair is a member of the WMMS PTA Board of Directors. As such, the chair agrees to attend monthly board meetings with the WMMS Executive Board and update the board on activities, issues or concerns once elected..

The Nominations Committee is:

  • Comprised of an odd number and no fewer than 3 members; at least 2 are board members, and at least one committee member is a member of this PTA, not serving on the board;
  • Neither the president nor the principal can serve on the nominating committee
  • Throughout the year, nominating committee is tasked with identifying talented, motivated and responsible individuals to serve as PTA officers
  • Nominating committee nominates only one person for each office (President, VPs, Treasurer and Secretary); they do not nominate persons for chairs or members of committees
  • Prior to the last general membership meeting, the nominating committee prepares a slate of nominees
  • President gives notice of the election of officers to the general membership at least 10 days before the last general membership meeting and must include the slate of nominees

The committee for 2017 will be formed in early January – if you are interested in serving on this very important piece to our PTA’s growth and success, please contact any officer or board member or email the PTA here.
